The 10 best free AI tools in 2026

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, Copilot, Perplexity and more: what each free AI actually offers in October 2026, from the model behind it to the limits, the sign-up question and the best use for each.

The free tiers of the big AI assistants have been reshuffled this autumn. On October 8, OpenAI moved free ChatGPT users to GPT-6 Luna. On September 28, Anthropic opened Claude Sonnet 5.5 to people who don't pay. And on October 9, Google went in the opposite direction: free Gemini users are now limited to Flash-Lite.

So we took stock. This guide looks at the ten free assistants worth your time as of October 12, 2026, and answers the same questions for each one: which model do you really get without paying, how far does it go before you hit a limit, do you need to sign up, and what happens to your conversations?

One thing to know up front: Free AI Chat, the site publishing this guide, appears in the list. It is our own product. We ranked it where we honestly think it fits and we spell out its limits the same way we do for everyone else.

Our method

We only looked at what each service gives away, never at features behind a subscription. Five things counted:

  • How good the free model is (not the best model the company sells).
  • How much you can do before a limit kicks in: messages, images, files, web search.
  • How well it handles languages other than English.
  • Whether it works without an account.
  • Where your data is processed and which law applies to it.

Side-by-side comparison

Situation on October 12, 2026. Free plans move fast, and several companies don't publish their exact limits.

1. ChatGPT: still the all-rounder to beat

OpenAI's assistant remains the reference point. Since August 2026, free accounts no longer have a cap on the number of text messages, and since October 8 those messages are answered by GPT-6 Luna, the lighter member of OpenAI's new model family. Paying users get the stronger GPT-6 Sol.

On top of chat, the free plan includes web search, image and file uploads, image generation and voice mode, each with smaller allowances than the paid plans; OpenAI doesn't publish all of them. You can try ChatGPT without an account, but saved history, voice and custom instructions need one.

  • Good: no cap on text messages, the widest set of tools, polished apps.
  • Less good: image and file allowances not disclosed, the top model is paid.

2. Claude: the writer's choice

Since September 28, 2026, free Claude accounts run on Sonnet 5.5, on the web and in the mobile apps. For drafting, summarizing a long report or working through a multi-step problem, it is among the strongest models anywhere, and its tone stays natural in many languages.

The catch is how quickly you can run out. Usage is measured over windows of a few hours and depends on how long your conversations are and how busy the servers are, so a big document or a long back-and-forth burns through it fast. Opus 5.5, Anthropic's most capable model, is reserved for subscribers, and you need an account to start.

  • Good: writing quality, handles long documents, sounds human.
  • Less good: allowances run out quickly, sign-up required.

3. Gemini: best if Google already runs your day

Not long ago, Gemini had the most generous free plan of the major players. That changed on October 9, 2026: without a subscription you now only get Flash-Lite, the smallest model in the lineup, while Flash and Pro sit behind a Google AI plan.

Its main advantage is unchanged: it plugs into Gmail, Docs, Drive and Google Search, and it can generate images. The website lets you try it without signing in, though only with one model and without file uploads. The mobile app asks for a Google account.

  • Good: deep Google integration, no credit card needed.
  • Less good: Flash-Lite only since October 9, limits not published.

4. Vibe (formerly Le Chat): Mistral's European alternative

In May 2026, Mistral AI renamed Le Chat to Vibe, keeping the same plans. It is the leading European option: built by a French company, with data handled under EU law, and it writes very well in French and other European languages.

Free users get web search, image generation, document analysis and custom agents. The daily volume is modest, though: published tests put it at a few dozen messages a day, and Mistral hasn't given an official number. You need a free account.

  • Good: European company, EU data rules, excellent in French.
  • Less good: low daily volume, sign-up required.

5. Microsoft Copilot: already built into your PC

Copilot combines OpenAI models with Bing search. It is free on copilot.microsoft.com, inside Windows and in the Edge browser, and a simple question doesn't require a Microsoft account.

Microsoft only says free use is "subject to available capacity" and gives no figure. Note that since April 2026, Copilot inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint is no longer free: it needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

  • Good: preinstalled on Windows, web search included, no account needed.
  • Less good: undisclosed caps, no longer free inside Office apps.

6. Free AI Chat: no sign-up, 14 languages (our tool)

Free AI Chat is the site you are on. You open it in a browser and start typing, with no account and no credit card: 20 free messages per day, along with 4 images and 2 files (Word, Excel or PDF) daily, in any of 14 languages. Free conversations run on our in-house model, which is built on third-party language models picked for the quality of their answers.

Subscribers can also pick a different model for each conversation: GPT-6 Luna from OpenAI with Essential (€6.99 a month); Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.7 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 with Premium (€9.99 a month); and Claude Opus 5.5 with Pro (€19.99 a month).

The limits are real. Once your daily allowance is used up, you wait for the next day or subscribe, and the big-name models listed above are not part of the free plan. Where Free AI Chat earns its place is speed of access: a question answered, an image created or a document drafted in seconds, without filling in a form first.

  • Good: no account, images and files included in the free plan, 14 languages, several leading AIs under one subscription.
  • Less good: daily allowances, the best-known models are for subscribers only.

7. Perplexity: research with citations

Perplexity behaves more like a search engine that writes than a chat partner. Each answer links to the pages it was built from, so it is the most dependable choice when you need to check a fact or gather sources quickly.

Without paying, you can run as many basic searches as you like with its own Sonar model, plus a handful of deeper "Pro" searches each day, and no account is needed. For long pieces of writing, the assistants higher up this list do a better job.

  • Good: sources on every answer, no cap on basic searches, no account.
  • Less good: weaker for writing, deep searches are rationed.

8. DeepSeek: strong model, but think about your data

DeepSeek, a Chinese company, gives away its DeepSeek V4 model, which is excellent at reasoning, math and programming. Because the model weights are open, it can also run on your own machine.

Its website and app, however, process conversations on servers in China under Chinese law. European privacy regulators have pushed back: Italy had the app pulled from app stores in 2025, and Berlin's data protection commissioner found the transfer of user data to China unlawful. Keep anything personal or work-related out of it.

  • Good: very capable, free, open-weight model.
  • Less good: data processed in China, challenged by European regulators, sign-up required.

9. Grok: for keeping up with X

xAI's Grok is free on grok.com and in the X app with a basic account. Its selling point is live access to posts on X, which helps when you are following a story as it unfolds.

The free plan got smaller in 2026: the latest model is for subscribers, image and video generation are no longer free, and users report about ten messages every two hours, since xAI doesn't publish a number.

  • Good: up-to-the-minute news via X.
  • Less good: tight and undisclosed limits, best model behind a paywall.

10. Meta AI: one tap away in WhatsApp

Meta AI comes free inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook, and has been available in Europe too since 2025. There is no app to download: you chat with it as you would with a contact.

It works for a quick question, but it falls behind dedicated assistants when it comes to writing at length or analyzing a document. Your conversations pass through Meta's services, something to bear in mind for anything sensitive.

  • Good: nothing to install, reachable from WhatsApp.
  • Less good: limited for longer tasks, tied to Meta's ecosystem.

So which free AI should you use?

No single assistant wins at everything. Match the tool to the job:

  • One tool for nearly everything: ChatGPT.
  • Writing, summarizing or digging into a long text: Claude.
  • Keeping your data in Europe: Vibe by Mistral.
  • Checking a fact and seeing the sources: Perplexity.
  • Chatting, making an image or a file with no account: Free AI Chat.
  • Living in Gmail and Google Docs: Gemini.

The fine print of "free"

Free never means without conditions. Companies cap usage, keep their strongest models for paying customers and may use your chats to improve their products. Look at the privacy settings of whichever tool you choose, and don't share health details, bank information or passwords with any AI assistant.

Free plans also change quickly: within two weeks, ChatGPT and Claude upgraded theirs while Gemini scaled back. We'll revise this guide whenever a change matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI right now?

In October 2026, ChatGPT offers the most complete free plan: no cap on text messages with GPT-6 Luna, plus web search, files and images. For writing and reasoning, Claude with Sonnet 5.5 is stronger, but its free limits are tighter.

Which free AI tools work without an account?

ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini (on its website) and Free AI Chat can be used without signing up. Claude, Mistral's Vibe, DeepSeek and Grok require an account.

Is there a good free AI from Europe?

Yes. Vibe, Mistral AI's assistant (previously called Le Chat), is made in France and processes data under European law.

Can I still use Gemini for free?

Yes, but since October 9, 2026 the free plan only includes Gemini Flash-Lite. The Flash and Pro models require a Google AI subscription.

Is it safe to use DeepSeek?

The model itself is strong, but DeepSeek's website and app process conversations on servers in China, and several European data protection authorities have challenged it. Avoid sharing personal or work information with it.
